Female Imams?

As you may or may not know, this is an issue in modern Islam. For those who doesn’t know what an Imam is, it is the equevalent of a priest in Christianity. An Imam is the leader of the prayer. Regularily, men are the only ones allowed to lead mixed congregations, and sometimes even allowed (or required) to lead women congregations. Women in Islam are usually leaders of prayers if the congregation are just females. It has been an issue the fact that Qur’an doesn’t refuse a women to be a leader of a mixed congregation during prayer, and not all the scholars agree that there are Hadiths (traditions of the prophet PBUH) that prevent a woman to preach to mixed group. However, New York has seen the first female to lead a mixed congregation. For more info check this: http://www.arabnews.com/?page=4&section=0&article=60721&d=20&m=3&y=2005

Some other countries, such as Turkey and Canada are allowing this as well if the congregation accepts. Muslim scholars have debated this issue and their opinions go from: No, it is Haram (a sin in Islam), to: If the congregation agrees then it is fine.
the most conservative scholars have suggested that Muslim women are inferior in spirituality than men, thus they cannot lead them in religious practices…
